A shoplifter has been sentenced to 17 weeks in jail and has been banned from entering Aldershot for five years under a Criminal Behaviour Order.

Stephen Shanahan, who is 35 and of no fixed abode, stole confectionery, household products, and energy drinks worth more than £114 from Co-op on Lower Farnham Road, Aldershot.

The thefts took place between 8th January and 10th January, leading to Shanahan being charged with three counts of shop theft and refusing to provide a sample for a Class A drug test.

Shanahan pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced at Basingstoke Magistrates Court on 15th January.

Criminal Behaviour Order details

The court imposed a five-year Criminal Behaviour Order alongside the sentence. The order prohibits Shanahan from entering the whole of Aldershot, requires him to leave any business immediately if asked by staff, and stipulates that he must place items for purchase into baskets or trolleys and present payment.

Police Sergeant Rob Tiller from the Aldershot Neighbourhood Policing Team commented on the case.

"We know that Stephen Shanahan’s behaviour has had a huge impact on local businesses, staff and the wider community.

"We take all reports of shoplifting extremely seriously and I hope this result reassures the public that we will do all we can to put offenders before the courts.

"Our officers will look at all of the options that are available to us, including Criminal Behaviour Orders, in our relentless pursuit of criminals.”

Police are urging shop owners and staff members to report instances of shoplifting, emphasising that this information enables arrests, charges, and court convictions.
