Doctors at Guildford hospital begin new study on sepsis

The study aims to enhance the understanding of long-term effects of sepsis

Doctors at Royal Surrey in Guildford have initiated a study to investigate the mechanisms causing immunosuppression in sepsis survivors.

The DYNAMICS Trial is led by Intensive Care doctors Professor Ben Creagh-Brown and Dr Tahir Nasser, who aim to recruit approximately 100 sepsis patients from across the hospital over the upcoming months.

Sepsis is a severe complication arising from infection, with the body's immune response potentially causing multiple organ failure and death without prompt treatment.

Immunosuppression is a recognised long-term consequence for survivors, leaving them at risk of recurrent, potentially fatal infections.

Dr Nasser said:

“Thanks to better recognition and treatment of sepsis, survival is improving. As a result, we are seeing more sepsis survivors.

They often have an exhausted immune system and are at risk of developing further infections.

If we can identify the molecular mechanisms underpinning this, we may be able to restore their immunity”

The study began at Royal Surrey this week and is set to continue until early May.
