People are being targeted by phone scammers posing as Surrey Police, with callers falsely claiming to be from the police force's 101 number.

The scammers are reportedly advising individuals to verify the legitimacy of the number by Googling the 01483 571212 number, which does belong to Surrey Police.

Criminals are using ‘spoofing’ software to disguise their true caller ID, making it appear as if the call originates from trustworthy organisations such as police departments, banks, or government bodies.

These fraudulent calls might be automated or initiated by a real person, with the primary aim of deceiving recipients into revealing personal information or transferring money.

Surrey Police have reminded the public that a legitimate police officer would never call unexpectedly to request personal information or bank account details.

Additionally, police officers would not ask individuals to withdraw cash or purchase high-value items for an investigation.

Anyone receiving such calls should take the caller's details and contact Surrey Police via 101 or their website's online chat function to verify the caller's identity.

The Surrey Police website also offers resources for reporting crimes, checking investigation updates, reporting road traffic incidents, and submitting information requests.

In emergencies, individuals are advised to call 999.
