Plans for a 62-home development in Hersham have been put forward for land off Burwood Road.

The scheme would see a mix of apartments and family houses built on a 2.7-hectare site south of 131–147 Burwood Road. Alongside the homes, the plans include new access roads, open space and a woodland walk.

Developers, Ashill Land Ltd, said the proposals are designed to “complement and enhance” the existing suburban area of Hersham. Plans also feature more than a hectare of open space, including a “natural playspace”, a village green-style hub and a woodland walk open to the public.

The proposals include one- and two-bedroom flats as well as two- to four-bedroom houses, with private gardens for houses and shared outdoor space for apartment residents. A new vehicular entrance would be created on Burwood Road, along with a pedestrian crossing and footway improvements, while a separate pedestrian link would connect to Turners Lane.

Developers said the project would deliver 31 affordable homes, split between affordable rent and shared ownership, helping Elmbridge Borough Council meet local housing demand.

The scheme has received a mixed response. One resident praised the plans, stating: “This looks like a really good and exciting development bringing much needed life to the village.”

Others were not so convinced. “This development seems like too large an environmental impact on natural land for a small number of dwellings,” said one comment. A few people raised issues with the development displacing horses, deer, foxes and other wildlife from the area."

Designers say the scheme has been revised following feedback from planning officers and neighbours, with changes including tweaks to the road layout and the reduction of some homes near protected trees to improve garden space and protect the landscape. Existing trees and hedgerows would largely be retained, alongside new planting aimed at boosting biodiversity. Plans also include sustainable drainage features to reduce flood risk.

Planning officers reviewing earlier versions of the scheme raised concerns about garden sizes in shaded areas and the impact on protected trees, but were otherwise broadly supportive of the direction of travel, including the level of affordable housing.

Residents can comment on the planning application until May 8. A decision on the application will be made by Elmbridge Borough Council at a later date.
