Pensioner lives dream with thrilling supercar experience in Surrey
Care home initiative helps Peter Kluss enjoy high-speed ride
A 74-year-old pensioner with a lifelong love of fast cars seized an opportunity through his care home's "Wishing Tree" initiative to experience the thrill of a 120mph passenger ride at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey.
Peter Kluss, who resides at Care UK's Colne View care home in Halstead, Essex, and is paralysed down one side after suffering a stroke in around 2008, relished the experience in a BMW M135i.
Additionally, Kluss took the wheel of an Audi R8 and a Porsche 911 Carrera, specially modified with adapted controls.
Making Dreams Come True
Reflecting on his day, Kluss described it as "absolutely fantastic."
"I cannot believe I got to drive two cars that I have always wanted to drive," he said. "Who would have thought that could happen for me?"
The Wishing Tree initiative is designed to encourage residents to embark on new adventures and revisit past passions, enriching their lives with fulfilling experiences.
A Passion for Cars
Before his time at Colne View, Kluss was able to continue driving despite his stroke thanks to an adapted car.
His move to the care home meant giving up driving, leaving him to miss the joy of being behind the wheel.
Care home staff took action upon discovering his dream of driving a supercar, leading to the unforgettable outing.
Lifetime Mechanic
Kluss's connection with cars began early, growing up on a farm and initially working as a mechanic.
His passion endured through changes in career paths, and despite financial limitations, he maintained a keen interest in high-performance vehicles.
Kluss expressed immense gratitude for the chance to drive cars like the Porsche, saying, "I was incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to drive one in my lifetime."
Community Spirit
Kim Richardson, senior customer relations manager at Colne View, shared the joy of fulfilling Kluss's wish, stating, "Seeing Peter back behind the wheel and smiling throughout the experience was incredibly special for everyone involved."
Staff at Colne View ensured he enjoyed the exhilarating acceleration, with Kluss keen to "feel the G-force."
Richardson added, "The whole day was unforgettable and it was wonderful to see Peter enjoying every moment."
