The money comes from the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), a charge on new developments, which helps provide the services and facilities communities need. Since 2016, the Council has collected over £22 million in CIL, with £12.34 million already spent on strategic and local improvement projects.

Strategic Infrastructure Projects

Most of the funding (around 80%) goes to strategic projects that support the borough as a whole. Recent examples include:

£305,873 to extend Horley Town Council offices and improve accessibility

£153,789 to replace the sports pavilion at Howard Close Recreation Ground, Walton on the Hill

£160,986 to expand the SEND unit at Dovers Green School, Reigate

£85,859 to expand the SEND unit at St Matthews CofE Primary School, Redhill

Paul Devine, Chairman of Walton Warriors Football Club, said:

"The new pavilion has been incredibly important for our club. It’s safer, has more storage, better facilities for girls, and is now a hub for the wider community too."

Local Neighbourhood Projects

The CIL Local Fund supports smaller community projects, often suggested by residents or local groups. Recent projects include:

£17,400 for extra practice rooms at Heathcote Medical Centre, Tadworth

£29,000 to improve Chipstead Scouts’ buildings

£10,000 to renovate Burgh Heath War Memorial Hall

£31,998 for all-weather footpaths in Reigate

£20,000 to improve Merstham Cricket Club pitches

£1,350 to refurbish ‘little libraries’ in Banstead, Merstham, and Reigate

A representative from Heathcote Medical Centre added:

"The funding has allowed us to improve parking, add bike racks, and expand clinic space, helping us better serve patients and the local community."

Have Your Say

Councillor Kate Fairhurst said:

"CIL funding has made a real difference across the borough. Anyone with ideas for projects that could benefit their local area can submit a bid – we encourage everyone to get involved."
