A rabbit from Surrey has broken a world record after more than doubling his life expectancy.

Herbie, a lionhead rabbit, has been named the oldest living rabbit on record at 15 and 82 days as of 10 November 2025.

Most of his breed only live between seven and ten years.

He resides with his owners, Richard and Melissa Dunham, who adopted him from a pet shop at eight weeks old.

The Dunhams, both teachers, have cared for rabbits since 2010 and rescued numerous animals, including Herbie, who became a companion for another rabbit named Flopsy.

Over the years, Herbie has had three rabbit wives; Flopsy, Tinks, and currently, Betty.

Melissa described Herbie as ‘particularly alpha and very bossy’, and enjoys watching her husband Richard chase Herbie around their home.

Herbie has shown a strong bond with Richard, often joining him and Melissa for snuggles on the sofa or in the garden sun.

When asked if they’re surprised by how long Herbie has lived, Melissa admitted: "Absolutely! He is an amazing little bunny. His spirit is as strong as his determination, and for such a small chap his personality is huge."
