Local NHS service urges people to look after vulnerable people around them as heatwave set to continue

The Surrey and Sussex NHS Trust says these could include older people, babies and those with long term health conditions

NHS Surrey and Sussex is urging people to look after older relatives, neighbours, and anyone else who may be more vulnerable to the heat, including infants and those with long-term health conditions.

NHS UK says those who are most at risk are people who have a serious or long-term illness including heart or lung conditions, diabetes, kidney disease, Parkinson's disease or some mental health conditions

They also those who are on multiple medicines that may make them more likely to be badly affected by hot weather should also be extra cautious during hot weather

A Heat Health Alert is currently in effect with high temperatures forecasted to persist, increasing the risk of dehydration, sunburn, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.

Families enjoying parks, beaches, and outdoor activities over half term are encouraged to seek shade during the hottest part of the day between 11am and 3pm, stay hydrated,and wear hats, sunglasses, and loose-fitting clothing.

Parents are advised to apply suncream with at least SPF30 regularly throughout the day, particularly for young children.

Residents and visitors are advised to choose the appropriate NHS service if they become unwell during the half term period.

The service are asking people to reduce pressure on 999 by only using it for life-threatening emergencies

For urgent health advice that is not life-threatening, NHS 111 online, local pharmacies, Urgent Treatment Centres, or Minor Injury Units should be used where appropriate.

Furthermore, people are being asked to consider pharmacies for advice and treatment for common summer conditions including sunburn, hay fever, insect bites, and heat rash.
