Construction work has begun on a new permanent home for the Hythe Medical Centre in Egham, Surrey, after years of patients receiving care in temporary cabins.

The Egham Hythe Centre, located on Thorpe Road, was sold to health and care developer Prime PLC by Runnymede Borough Council in 2024, after previous efforts to increase its usage failed.

The redevelopment project aims to provide modern and expanded facilities to accommodate both patients and staff effectively, serving approximately 7,600 patients in the area.

Although financial details of the sale remain undisclosed, the council previously reported annual subsidising costs of £240,000 for the centre and community services.

The council initially considered a health hub model but proceeded with a full sale due to financial constraints.

While the new centre will reduce space available for community events, it promises an improved medical environment, according to project stakeholders including Prime PLC, Newcore Capital, Hythe Medical Centre, and the NHS Surrey and Sussex Integrated Care Board.

Councillor Robert King, Co-Leader of Runnymede Borough Council, said, “We promised to secure better healthcare for Egham Hythe and Pooley Green. Completing this sale moves us a big step closer to delivering that promise."

For the past 15 years, patients have been treated in temporary buildings, which King noted was insufficient.

“This building can do far more for our community as a modern GP surgery and will allow space for other health services to be built around the practice. That is exactly the investment local people deserve,” he said.

Dr Khurshid, GP Partner at Hythe Medical Centre, expressed enthusiasm for the development, saying, “After years of caring for patients from temporary cabins, we’re thrilled to see work begin on a bright, purpose-built surgery that everyone in Egham Hythe and surrounding areas can be proud of.”

He added that the new facility would allow staff to provide more local services, ensuring accessible care for all age groups, consolidating health services for generations to come.

The project is expected to be completed by summer 2027.
