Nearly 300 new Surrey homes in the works

Outline application to be submitted for the development on Molesey Road

Developers are preparing to submit an outline application for a housing development that could see up to 280 homes built on a site along Molesey Road in Hersham.

The proposal features a mix of two-storey houses and apartment blocks up to four storeys high, situated on an 8.4-hectare site within the Green Belt, south of Walton-on-Thames.

Despite the site’s Green Belt status, planning documents indicate it was once a quarry used for sand and gravel extraction until 2001 and later filled with construction waste and restored.

The land is currently described as grassland, scrub, and horse paddocks, much of it reportedly in ‘poor condition’.

Developers claim this new scheme could help Elmbridge Borough Council meet local housing demand.

Environmental Concerns

A screening request argues the development is unlikely to have significant environmental impacts, thus not requiring a full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

The report concludes any disruptions such as noise or traffic would be temporary and manageable through planning conditions.

Elmbridge Borough Council expects to decide by the 4th April if a full EIA is needed before developers submit a formal planning application.

Nearby Projects

Other proposed developments within a few kilometres of the site include up to 262 homes at Hersham Technology Place, over 200 homes at Hersham Golf Club, around 190 homes on the Esher Rugby Club, 74 residential units at Sundial House, and 40 commercial and residential units.

However, the report suggests these projects are unlikely to create significant cumulative impacts when combined with the Hersham proposal.

Residents are invited to comment on the plans as the area continues to evolve into a mix of residential, industrial, and open spaces.
