Bob Mortimer mourns the passing of beloved Gone Fishing dog Ted
Ted, who was rescued from a dog's home in Surrey in 2013, won fans on the BBC series after first appearing in 2020
Comedian Bob Mortimer has expressed his sorrow following the death of Ted, the popular dog from Mortimer And Whitehouse: Gone Fishing.
Ted gained recognition when he appeared alongside Mortimer and fellow comedian Paul Whitehouse during the show’s third series in 2020.
He quickly became a favourite among fans, eventually receiving a lifetime achievement award during the 2025 Christmas special of the BBC series.
Mortimer described Ted as a cherished companion, saying: “So very, very sad. Lovely Ted, the best companion and the greatest little chum. Going to miss him so much… and away boss.”
Whitehouse also shared his sentiments, bidding farewell to Ted, whom he regarded as a unique character: “Bye bye Ted old friend. He wasn’t a dog, he was a species all of his own. He’s gone to the great briefcase emporium in the sky. We will really miss you mate.”
Lisa Clark, the series’ executive producer and Ted’s owner, reflected on Ted’s role as both a family pet and an integral part of the show.
She fondly remembered his antics: “Ted was a much-loved family pet as well as a treasured companion to Paul and Bob on Gone Fishing," said Clark.
"He took fame in his little stride and loved nothing better than messing around on the riverbanks, nicking Jammie Dodgers from Bob and bait from Paul. He will be sorely missed both at home and on screen. We’ll never forget him."
Ted is set to make his final appearance in the upcoming ninth series of Mortimer And Whitehouse: Gone Fishing.
Ted was rescued from a dog’s home in Surrey in early 2013 at around six months old by Clark, who cared for him throughout his life.
Ted even made literary contributions, being credited as the author of two whimsical books, Pawtobiography and Pup Fiction.
The BBC Two series, which debuted in 2018, features Mortimer and Whitehouse exploring life's topics through their fishing adventures. It has been nominated for six Bafta TV awards.
Filming for the programme has taken place at various locations across the UK and Ireland, including Norfolk, Donegal, the River Dee in North Wales, and Dumfries and Galloway.
