Man jailed for Mercedes theft after police chase in Esher
Lukas Arsulis was later linked to multiple car thefts across Surrey
Lukas Arsulis, a 30-year-old from Romford, has been sentenced to four years and six months in prison after crashing a stolen Mercedes and leading police to uncover multiple car thefts in Surrey.
Police spotted the Mercedes GLE on Portsmouth Road in Esher in the early hours of 2nd April.
When signalled to stop, Arsulis sped away, but failed to control the vehicle and crashed into a residential driveway.
Arsulis abandoned the Mercedes and fled on foot but was detained by officers shortly after.
His belongings were found to contain a Stanley knife, tape, gloves, and a car key, and checks showed the vehicle was stolen.
The arrest sparked a wider investigation into vehicle thefts, with Arsulis linked to thefts across Surrey and neighbouring counties.
CCTV footage from Bisley showed a man resembling Arsulis stealing a Mercedes GLC, using a distinctive bag which was later found at his home.
Items commonly associated with vehicle theft, such as false registration plates, specialist tools, and multiple mobile phones, were recovered during the search.
Guildford Crown Court charged Arsulis with conspiracy to steal motor vehicles, dangerous driving, driving without insurance, possession of a bladed article, and criminal damage.
PC Duncan Mackenzie, who led the investigation, emphasised the importance of the quick police actions that led to Arsulis' arrest.
"Officers stopping a vehicle quickly exposed a much wider picture of organised vehicle theft," Mackenzie said.
"The quick actions of the officers who pursued and arrested Arsulis gave us the opportunity to build a strong investigation."
He added that the investigation involved CCTV analysis, phone evidence, and items recovered during searches.
"Vehicle theft has a significant impact on victims, leaving many without transport and facing considerable financial and emotional stress."
