Leatherhead player travels to wrong Ashford for FA Cup tie
Marcel Barrington ended up 70 miles from his team's game, but still came off the bench in a 1-0 win
A Leatherhead player has been gently mocked by his own club after travelling to the wrong Ashford for their FA Cup tie.
Marcel Barrington made his way to Ashford United's Green Box Stadium in Kent — more than 70 miles (113km) from where his team were actually playing.
The Second Qualifying Round game against Kingstonian was being staged at the Robert Parker Stadium in Ashford, Surrey, home of Ashford Town (Middlesex), with whom Kingstonian currently ground share.
Despite the lengthy detour, Barrington still managed to reach the correct ground in time to come on as a second-half substitute.
His team went on to win the tie 1-0 to progress to the next round.
Leatherhead's official match report made light of the mix-up, saying it would "spare any blushes" by keeping the player's name a secret — before jokingly renaming him "Barcel Marrington".
Barrington, 31, has previously turned out for Stoke City's under-18s and Leicester City's under-21s, as well as Margate, Dartford, Herne Bay and Staines Town.
