Hampshire police seize thousands of e-scooters in safety crackdown
Chief Constable warns of dangers and calls for public support
Hampshire Police have seized thousands of e-scooters and e-bikes in the past year as part of their continued efforts to tackle illegal and dangerous use.
Chief Constable Alexis Boon highlighted rising safety concerns related to e-scooters during an online question-and-answer session at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary's commissioner's oversight of policing services (COPS) event.
Boon addressed the event on 22nd April, emphasising the dangers posed when e-scooters are used irresponsibly in public areas.
"E-scooters have become increasingly prevalent, and in the wrong hands they can be absolutely dangerous to members of the public," Chief Constable Boon said.
"They have the potential to cause serious injuries, and we take that risk very seriously."
H2 Enforcement and Public Support
Over the last year, approximately 500 e-scooters and e-bikes have been confiscated by officers, who have focused enforcement on illegal use on pavements or dangerous riding behaviours.
"Our neighbourhood policing teams are actively targeting those riding irresponsibly," Chief Constable Boon added.
"We do take action, and we will continue to seize vehicles where necessary."
Despite intensified enforcement, police acknowledge the need for public cooperation in order to effectively address the issue.
"This remains a constant priority for us. But we also need help. Parents, please do not buy e-scooters for your children. They are extremely dangerous," Boon said.
H2 Measures to Prevent Repeat Offences
Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones discussed additional measures aimed at preventing repeat offences.
A contract with Silverlake Garage allows authorities to dispose of seized vehicles, which include crushing those linked to illegal activities such as street racing or drug-related offences.
Authorities remain committed to addressing the misuse of electric vehicles as concerns rise over their impact on Hampshire’s roads and pavements.
