Remedial repairs planned for disused WWII bunker beneath Guildford playground
Planning permission seeks to make area safe for visitors
Planning permission to undertake repairs on a structurally unstable WWII air raid shelter beneath Foxenden Quarry Playground in Guildford is expected to be granted next week.
The underground bunker has fallen into disrepair, with a failed floor and cracks appearing, posing a potential risk to park and playground users.
Guildford Borough Council has submitted a request for planning permission to make the shelter structurally sound, although Councillor Phil Bellamy assures the public that the adjacent playground remains safe.
Councillor Bellamy noted, "Foxenden Quarry Playground remains open and safe for public use. The playground is regularly inspected to ensure it meets the required safety standards."
While the area around the bunker is already cordoned off, remedial work is intended to make the structure safe for the long term by filling the void with compact stone to prevent further damage or collapse.
Councillor Bellamy continued, "A planning application for remedial work will be considered by the planning committee next week. If planning permission is granted, secure fencing will be installed around the work area, and a section of the playground will be temporarily closed while the repairs are carried out. These measures are necessary to enable the works to be completed safely."
Planning officers are recommending approval of the application, with their report stating the works would be minor in scale and not detrimental to the surrounding area.
The bunker is separate from the larger Foxenden Tunnel system, a deep air raid shelter also dating from WWII.
Councillors are set to review the recommendations next week which, if approved, would ensure the playground and park remain safe and enjoyable for future visitors.
