Firefighters in Liss carried out a successful rescue operation yesterday (25 June) to free a 20-year-old donkey named Chocolate, who was trapped in mud and faced the risk of overheating.
Chocolate was discovered with mud up to her belly just after 5pm in Liss.
On-call firefighters from Petersfield, with the assistance of teams specialised in animal rescue from Lyndhurst and Winchester, promptly arrived at the scene.
The trained teams worked tirelessly in the intense heat to ensure that Chocolate did not overheat while retrieving her from the muddy pit.
Once freed, a vet examined Chocolate to ensure her well-being before she was returned to her enclosure, where she reunited with fellow animals.
Fire crews returned to station shortly after 7pm having been served a useful reminder not to leave chocolate out in the sun!
