Investigation launched after major fire at sports pavilion
Fire under investigation after pavilion blaze in Chessington
An investigation has been launched after a large fire broke out at a sports pavilion on Jubilee Way in Chessington on Tuesday evening.
Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were called to the scene shortly before 5pm on 8 July. Most of the single-storey building was alight when crews arrived. Control Officers received 54 emergency calls about the incident, mobilising crews from Kingston, Wimbledon, Surbiton and nearby stations.
The fire was brought under control by 7:09pm, but not before significant damage was caused to the structure.
Local residents have been advised to keep their windows and doors closed due to heavy smoke in the area.
People were also asked to avoid the area while emergency services responded.
The cause of the fire is not yet known and is now under investigation by London Fire Brigade.
