Farnborough man jailed for controlling behaviour and assault
Matthew Roberts has been sentenced for domestic abuse offences
A 37-year-old man from Farnborough, has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison after admitting to offences involving controlling or coercive behaviour, intentional strangulation, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm against a 38-year-old woman.
Matthew Roberts pleaded guilty to the charges during his appearance at Portsmouth Crown Court on 23rd February.
He was sentenced at the same court on 5th May.
The victim endured consistent assaults, interrogations, and physical, mental, and verbal abuse from Roberts between 30th November 2022 and 17th November 2023.
Roberts was arrested on 17th November 2023.
A comprehensive investigation led to charges, including controlling or coercive behaviour (CCB), assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH), and intentional strangulation.
Detective Constable Luke Fairchild, the officer overseeing the case, expressed satisfaction with Roberts' sentencing, stating: “I am pleased with this sentence and hope it sets a precedent that domestic abuse and violence against women and girls will not be tolerated in our community."
DC Fairchild commended the victim’s courage throughout the legal proceedings and stressed the importance of reporting domestic abuse, saying, “Let this serve as a warning that we will work tirelessly to put anyone who inflicts such harm before the courts."
He encouraged others who have experienced domestic abuse to seek help and assured them that they would be believed and listened to.
