The investigation into a reported rape in Epsom has been closed after Surrey Police concluded no sexual offence took place.

The incident was initially reported in the early hours of Saturday, 11th April, and was said to have taken place between 2am and 4am outside Epsom Methodist Church on Ashley Road.

After a thorough investigation, including CCTV analysis, witness interviews, and forensic tests, it was found that the woman in her 20s suffered an accidental head injury during a night out in Epsom, which led to a confused report.

It has now been confirmed there was no offence or suspects involved.

The woman has given permission for this information to be shared and continues to receive support from relevant services.

Surrey Police said in a statement they take every report of sexual offending seriously, and any such report is treated with sensitivity.

They added: "To do this, it is imperative that the appropriate time is allowed to complete a thorough investigation and support is given to the complainant to progress enquiries at their own pace. This limits what information we are able to release publicly.

At the early stages of this investigation, we issued an appeal for any witnesses or information that could help us progress our enquiries and identify any potential suspects. There was a lack of information in our initial appeal particularly regarding potential persons of interest.

This was because the descriptions given were vague and limited. We recognise this caused concern amongst the community. We are now confident that there was no offence, and there were no suspects."

Local officers will remain visibly present in Epsom to address any concerns or questions from the public.
