Epsom protests call for answers on alleged rape outside church
Police maintain order as crowds demand details from Surrey authorities
Surrey Police have stated that crime and disorder will not be tolerated following protests in Epsom concerning an alleged rape case in the town.
The protests centred around calls for more information about the reported attack on a woman in her 20s, which took place between 2am and 4am on Saturday outside Epsom Methodist Church on Ashley Road.
The victim alleged she was followed and attacked after leaving the Labyrinth Epsom nightclub.
Surrey Police have announced that they do not possess sufficient details to release descriptions of the suspects.
On Wednesday, social media footage showed a large group of protesters gathered in Epsom's town centre.
Police officers equipped with helmets and shields were present, with objects appearing to have been propelled towards them.
The demonstration was promoted online by Danny Tommo, linked in the past to right-wing activist Tommy Robinson.
A letter read out during the protest expressed concern from a resident regarding the police's handling of the case, questioning whether suspects had been identified or detained and if there was any lingering threat to the public.
The protest also involved road blockages, which disrupted traffic, before the crowd dispersed at around 8pm.
East Surrey Chief Superintendent Mark Chapman addressed the situation, remarking:
“There was a significant police presence in Epsom town centre this evening to support the group’s right to lawful protest and minimise disruption to the local community.
“I appreciate that this may have caused concern to people in the town centre, and I would like to reassure you that our priority was to ensure the safety of the wider public, as well as the safety of those involved in the protest.
“I also appreciate that there was some disruption in the town centre while the protest was taking place and I would like to thank all those affected for their patience.
“We respect the right to lawful protest and will facilitate this wherever possible where it is safe to do so. However, criminal offences and public disorder will not be tolerated, and we will always take robust action against anyone who commits a criminal offence.”
Officers remained in Epsom town centre on Wednesday evening.
Earlier police updates urged the public not to speculate on suspect descriptions due to insufficient information.
Witnesses or individuals with dashcam footage from the vicinity during the time of the alleged assault are urged to contact Surrey Police citing reference number PR/45260041426.
