A man has been sent to prison following a serious road collision in Epsom last year, after it was found he was more than twice the legal alcohol limit when he got behind the wheel.

The incident happened shortly after 1am on Saturday, 11 May 2025, at a set of traffic lights on Epsom High Street, where a Toyota Yaris drove into a motorcycle that was stationary at a red signal, throwing the motorcyclist off of his bike.

The Toyota then overturned and went on to strike another vehicle waiting at the junction.

Witnesses reported seeing the driver step out of his car after the crash and walk away from the scene without checking on those involved or attempting to contact emergency services.

Members of the public later helped police locate him nearby, and officers were only able to confirm his involvement after directly questioning him. He subsequently admitted he had been driving the Toyota.

A roadside breath test showed he was over the legal alcohol limit, leading to his arrest on suspicion of drink driving and causing serious injury through dangerous driving while over the limit.

Further analysis of his blood confirmed an alcohol level of 121mg per 100ml- well above the 80mg legal threshold. A forensic reconstruction estimated that at the time of the crash his level was likely around 186mg per 100ml, more than double the limit.

The rider suffered serious injuries requiring multiple surgeries and is expected to need ongoing medical treatment as they continue to recover.

Sergeant Adam Pegler said: "This incident serves as a reminder of how dangerous drink driving is. It is fortunate no one was killed but the victim has a long road to recovery - someone who was simply on their way home from work whose life was changed because of another person's selfish and careless actions.

"I would urge anyone who would consider drink driving to remember this case and think twice before putting themselves and other people at risk"

The driver of the Yaris - Eden Mander, 19, (04/02/2007), of Epsom, was sentenced at Guildford Crown Court on 28 May to a 16-month prison sentence for causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

This will run concurrently with a four-month prison sentence for drink driving.

He has also been disqualified from driving for three years.
