Driver jailed for killing man, 70s, in Banstead crash
Jack Charalambous was killed when David Haggard drifted into oncoming traffic on Croydon Lane
A 53-year-old man has been sentenced to six years in prison for causing the death of a 76-year-old after driving dangerously in Banstead, Surrey last year.
David Haggard, from Beare Green, near Dorking, appeared at Kingston Crown Court and was convicted after a trial of causing the fatal collision on Croydon Lane at 6.45pm on 16th March 2023.
The court heard how Haggard, driving a Nissan Note, clipped the kerb three times before drifting into the opposite lane and colliding with Jack Charalambous’ Mazda 2.
Tragically, Mr Charalambous died at the scene.
Haggard was also uninsured at the time of the collision.
Alongside his six-year sentence, he received a three-month sentence for causing death while driving uninsured, which will run at the same time.
He has been disqualified from driving for nine years and 11 months and will need to pass an extended test to regain his licence.
Following the sentencing, Jack Charalambous’ family paid tribute, describing him as “a true gent” and “a pillar of the community”.
He had run a barber shop in Thornton Heath for 40 years and been deeply involved in community events.
His family’s statement also expressed gratitude to the witnesses who were present in Mr Charalambous’ final moments and to those who worked on the case to deliver justice.
Investigating Officer Amilia Bishop addressed the avoidable nature of the incident, saying, “This was a wholly avoidable tragedy caused by David Haggard driving in what the Judge concurred was a manner 'significantly over the threshold of dangerous driving, for a significant period of time'.”
“The family of Jack Charalambous have had to endure unimaginable loss.
My thoughts remain with them, and I’d like to thank them for their patience and grace throughout this incredibly difficult trial.
“We hope today’s sentence provides some sense of justice and serves as a stark reminder that every decision made behind the wheel can change lives forever,” she added.
