A driver, who claimed his vehicle had a defect, after it collided with a pedestrian, has been sentenced.

It happened in April 2024, on High Street, Epsom.

A pedestrian had reached the pavement, just outside the Metro Bank, when suddenly there was a loud engine noise.

Having witnessed a vehicle flash past, the pedestrian was then struck by a second vehicle. The victim sustained high-impact injuries.

Due to the injuries sustained, the victim was off work for several months, which affected their career progression. The victim in this case described the anxiety and flashbacks caused from the incident.

The driver of a black Mercedes A Class AMG claimed that the vehicle was defective and that it wasn't down to his careless driving. He was charged with causing an injury by careless/inconsiderate driving.

Tim Tan, 23, of Leatherhead, was sentenced at Guildford Crown Court, on 18 September 2026 to:

-Two years in prison, suspended for two years

-£1,500 costs

-Three-year disqualification

-Extended retest requirement

-120 hours unpaid work

The officer in charge of the case, PC Watson, said: “This was a serious collision, in a busy town centre, witnessed by members of the public and its consequences have been significant for the victim. The sentence given should serve as a reminder to every driver that they have a responsibility to drive safely and consider the potential consequences of their actions.”
