Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) is leading an investigation into a suspected arson attack on a 5G mast in Ottershaw, Surrey.

The incident occurred at 8.30am on 21st November, when Surrey Police and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service were called to a fire on Bittams Lane. The fire was extinguished and no injuries were reported.

A 39-year-old man from Ottershaw was arrested at the scene on suspicion of arson and possession of an offensive weapon. He was subsequently detained under the Mental Health Act.

According to authorities, specialist counter-terrorism officers took over the investigation after initial enquiries uncovered information suggesting possible links to other incidents.

Detectives are now looking into a series of incidents in the Ottershaw and Chertsey areas that may be connected.

North Surrey Divisional Commander Chief Superintendent Aimee Ramm said: “Over the past month, we’ve seen a number of suspected arson attacks in the Ottershaw area which has understandably caused concern in our local community.

“Our investigative team has been working hard to establish the full circumstances surrounding the fires and following the two incidents last week, we now have intelligence to suggest two or more may be linked.

“Counter Terrorism Policing South East is now leading this investigation, and we will continue working closely with the team to facilitate local enquiries.

“Our local Safer Neighbourhood Team remains committed to working within the community to listen to any concerns and offer reassurance about the steps we’re taking to support this investigation.”

Police are appealing for anyone with doorbell or CCTV footage that could assist in their enquiries to come forward.
