A 73-year-old man from Camberley has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for sexually abusing a child under his care in Hampshire several decades ago.
Willy John Gillham, of Park Lane, was convicted at Winchester Crown Court on 12th January of buggery and indecent assault against a boy under the age of 16. The offences occurred between 1981 and 1982 at Palmerston House children’s home in Romsey, which has since closed. He was sentenced on 26th January.
Gillham was previously jailed in 2017 after being found guilty of raping another boy at the same facility during the 1980s. He served seven-and-a-half years of his 15-year sentence.
The latest investigation began in 2023 when another survivor came forward to report their experiences to Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary. Gillham, who was still in prison at the time, was interviewed as part of the inquiry. After his release, he was issued a postal requisition to attend court and face charges related to these newly reported offences.
Detective Constable Craig Rainsley said: “Gillham’s victim was in a setting where he should have been safe and cared for, but Gillham abused his authority and betrayed him in the worst way possible.
“The victim in this case has shown great courage in speaking with police, and I would like to commend their bravery throughout this investigation and subsequent trial.
“I am pleased that he has been brought to justice, and I hope this encourages other members of our community who have experienced such abuse to come forward.
“It doesn’t matter how long ago it was, you will be listened to and we will investigate.”
