Camberley community rallies to save Remembrance services amid council budget cuts
Local efforts ensure annual parade goes ahead despite financial challenges
The annual Remembrance services in Camberley, Surrey Heath, will proceed this year despite initial concerns due to council funding cuts.
These services, which honour the fallen in conflicts since the First World War, faced uncertainty after Surrey Heath Borough Council's financial crisis led to significant budget reductions.
A £3 million cut forced the council to make difficult spending decisions resulting in 14% staff loss and the removal of funding for the Remembrance parade.
Patrick Mathe, Chair of the Royal British Legion, described the loss of funding as disappointing but not unexpected.
However, the Royal British Legion has confirmed that the parade service and wreath-laying ceremony will take place.
Patrick Mathe said: “From the outset, one thing remained clear, our determination that the Camberley Remembrance Parade would continue and would go ahead at all costs.
"The commitment of our members, local veterans, volunteers, community organisations and supporters to preserving this important tradition has never wavered.
"Following discussions with Surrey County Royal British Legion representatives, and the Camberley Branch Committee, a decision was taken to establish a community-led solution."
In a show of community spirit, a new Remembrance community committee was created to oversee the organisation and fundraising necessary for the parade’s success.
Sarah-Jane Croke, Chief Executive of Surrey Heath Age Concern, received unanimous support to chair this new committee.
Despite funding limitations, the borough council pledged to support the service in any way possible, including through fundraising and personal contributions of time from its CEO.
Mathe expressed gratitude to Surrey Heath and its staff for their invaluable support throughout the entire process.
He added: “The guidance, assistance, and continued encouragement they have provided have been invaluable and have helped ensure that progress has been made at every stage.
“The commitment shown by all those involved demonstrates the strength of community spirit that exists across Surrey Heath.
“Remembrance in Camberley has always belonged to the community, and this year’s arrangements are a testament to what can be achieved when people come together with a shared purpose.”
