A local train station is in final 5 in the race to be crowned the UK's best train station

People have until midnight tonight (18 October) to vote for Brookwood in the World Cup of Stations, despite the tournament's name, the competition is only featuring stations within the UK

The tournament has been running every year since 2019, each year with a different theme, the theme this year is "connections that matter"

There were over 150 entrants into the tournament, which were whittled down to the final 25 by judges, before being put to final votes

One of the guest judges was Rail Historian and TV presenter Tim Dunn, he tells us it's no wonder railway stations can be so significant within communities

"We've had the railway now in Great Britain for over 200 years, and so it's no surprise that these little stations that we've built in communities have become part of the community.

In Great Britain we have more than 2500 stations. Around about 2000 of those have got station adopters who have volunteers who help look after them. And that means people who perhaps either retired or part of a school group want to add a little extra to the station.

And this tournament to me is a way of recognising some of those great activities that those people are doing in their spare time or staff doing above and beyond the call of duty."

The tournament started in 2019 as a competition through twitter, but has since grown into a bigger event

Tim told us about how competitive he's heard some people get about it

"You'll see people doing flyers out in the street. A couple of years ago, I know down in South London, one of the stations, the teams made their own flyers and they were out flyering in the pub and they wouldn't let people leave the pub till they voted for the station.

So it gets it gets it gets quite intense in a very short space of time. But it's loads of fun. It's just great fun to see people get behind their passion project."

The winner of the vote tonight will receive a giant plaque to be displayed at the station

Results are expected to be announced on Tuesday (20 October)
