Petition for school traffic crackdown in Addlestone gains support
Residents urge Surrey County Council to take action before accidents occur
Residents of Addlestone have gathered more than 100 signatures for a petition that calls for stricter traffic measures on School Lane in a bid to enhance safety during school hours.
The petition seeks the implementation of a 'school streets scheme,' which would restrict traffic during pick-up and drop-off times.
Residents highlight increasing congestion as a threat to the safety of families, urging Surrey County Council to intervene "before a serious accident occurs."
According to the petition, the growing traffic has resulted in dangerous driving, illegal parking, reduced visibility at junctions, and vehicles mounting kerbs, which places children and vulnerable road users at potential risk.
The petition also mentions regular obstruction of driveways, verbal abuse over safety concerns, as well as excessive noise and engine idling.
Currently, similar school street schemes operate in Farnham, Esher, and Ewell and the residents of Addlestone hope to see this model adopted for School Lane.
Surrey County Council Highways’ lead Councillor Matt Furniss expressed sympathy for the residents' concerns and thanked them for compiling community feedback.
Cllr Furniss shared that discussions are underway with Jubilee High School, St Paul’s Primary School, and Runnymede and Weybridge MP Ben Spencer, about potential solutions to the traffic problem.
He stated that options for highway improvements are being evaluated in conjunction with actions the schools might take to manage motor traffic effectively and enhance road safety.
Residents are also advocating for a comprehensive traffic and road safety assessment of the area alongside stronger enforcement against reckless and illegal parking.
The petition has garnered 116 signatures and is open for signatures until 8th October 2026 through Surrey County Council’s ePetition portal.
