Thousands have flocked to visit an annual county show which celebrates the rich heritage, culture, and industry of Suffolk.

Today is the first day of the Suffolk Show at Trinity Park in Ipswich, which dates back to 1832.

With 100 free activities, visitors can expect to climb aboard a fire engine and learn all about the life of a firefighter, as well as view the Sherman Tank used by the allies during the D-Day landings at the Victory80 display.

Social media phenomenon Spud Man will also be there, cooking up a storm but also educating people on how potatoes are farmed.

Greatest Hits Radio spoke to Show Director John Taylor who says:

"There's going to be 800 plus trade stands here, so there's something for everyone to see and do, the 12 display rings will be rammed.

We've got birds of prey, and this is the first time we've been allowed to have them because of Avian Flu.

Military vehicles will be there, but we have got one star of the show, and that is a Sherman tank, which is a pretty unique piece of kit.

Last year we had a Spitfire, this year we've got a Sherman tank that was actually used by the British Army on D-Day, on Sword Beach, and that was built in 1942.

It’s been restored in Essex and those guys who've led that have been superb.

We just wanted a big wow factor, and you can't get a bigger, better, bit of kit than that."

Mr Taylor did touch on a more serious message that the show hopes to leave with it's visitors:

“Food security is in the news all this week, with the negotiations with Europe, and it's not really going our way.

So, we've got to educate the public to support us because it's really important that they understand our plight.

It's really important that they understand we're not happy at the moment.

Now, the show's about a celebration, but what we do do, is have areas where we can talk about that, such as the NFU and the CLA areas.

As a Suffolk Agriculture Station Association, it is our duty.

We’ve got the East Anglian farmers unite guys coming too because they're aggrieved with our situation at the moment and the policies that are being drawn up.”

The show is on until tomorrow (Thursday 29 May).

Gates will open at 07:00 on both days of the event, with free parking.
