Six homes in Thorpeness are being demolished this week as coastal erosion continues to impact the seaside village in Suffolk.

The demolitions include a detached home and five apartments within a single building, with East Suffolk Council confirming that erosion in these areas has reached critical safety levels.

According to the authority, a total of ten properties will have been torn down since October 2023 once the latest demolitions are complete. The council also warned that three further properties are currently at immediate risk.

A spokesperson for East Suffolk Council said: “Erosion has now reached critical safety levels for six more homes, involving one detached home and five apartments within a single building. Demolition work began on site earlier this week.

“We are continuing to support affected homeowners and nearby residents have also been made aware.”

They acknowledged the emotional toll for those involved and asked visitors to avoid the affected areas to support the local community.

The council is considering proposals from homeowners on North End Avenue to install privately funded, short-term defences for their properties. It has also pledged funding to assist Thorpeness homeowners with demolition costs and support relocating to alternative housing if necessary.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Thorpeness will receive part of a £30 million package from the Environment Agency’s Coastal Adaptation Pilots initiative. However, the funding cannot be used to build sea defences.

An East Suffolk Council spokesperson explained: “The focus will be on having early conversations with those at medium and long-term risks to plan for the future and support those at high risk to move away from the risk zones.”
