15-year-old arrested over major fire at disused school in Haverhill
Investigations are ongoing
A 15-year-old boy has been arrested after a huge fire tore through a disused school building in Haverhill.
The incident occurred on the evening of 12th May at the former Parkway Middle School located on Park Road.
Police were alerted by the fire service at 8:46pm, and a cordon is currently in place as investigations continue into what is suspected to be an arson attack.
The teenager was arrested on 13th May on suspicion of criminal damage — specifically arson not endangering life.
He was taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning and has been released on bail, with a condition to return for questioning on 22nd June.
Detective Inspector Richard Prouse clarified the nature of the investigation: “We are investigating this fire as arson and believe there may have been a number of individuals that were either involved, in the area at the time, or that may have some knowledge of how the fire started and who may be responsible. This was an extremely dangerous situation that has led to the destruction of a very large building and a fire that could be seen for miles around."
He urged anyone with information, or individuals who know someone with pertinent details, to come forward to assist police inquiries.
