Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service has received an unprecedented response to their latest campaign, with a record 219 applications for on-call firefighter positions.

This surge contrasts with the typical 70 to 100 applications received annually, reflecting strong community engagement and awareness of the pivotal role these firefighters play in ensuring safety.

The greatest interest emerged from the North district of Suffolk, historically a challenging area for recruitment, marking an especially significant outcome.

The campaign launched after the Dunwich Heath Major Incident, which gained widespread media attention, highlighting the critical work of firefighters and sparking interest in the rewarding opportunities within Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service.

Priority will be given to applicants from areas needing increased firefighter availability to enhance operational resilience.

Initial assessments will establish applicants' availability in alignment with operational needs before the next stages, which include meeting local Watch Managers and learning more about the role through information evenings and aptitude assessments.

Chief Fire Officer Jon Lacey emphasized the vital role of on-call firefighters in supporting operational responses, citing the community's strong spirit reflected in the application's volume.

Recruitment and Retention Manager Martyn Hazelwood expressed gratitude for the campaign's reception and assured careful, fair review of each application.

Councillor Tristan Gale praised the enthusiasm and commitment shown by applicants, considering it a testament to Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service's esteemed reputation.

The campaign's success arrives as UK fire services look to enhance on-call firefighter recruitment and retention strategies, highlighted at a recent National Fire Chiefs Council event.
