Suffolk pub loses licence after 'nasty and prolonged assault'

A pub’s licence has been taken away amid a police investigation into what an officer called a ‘nasty and prolonged assault’.
East Suffolk councillors stripped The Stanford Arms, in Stanford Street, Lowestoft, of its licence at a meeting yesterday afternoon.
Suffolk Constabulary asked for the licence to be revoked after a fight on July 18.
John Corkett, the force’s licensing officer for the East Suffolk area, described the altercation as a ‘nasty and prolonged assault’ which could not be ‘justified in any way’.
Councillors were shown several videos supporting the police’s statement as well as a separate incident about a month before.
A further video was shown in private as it could impact any future legal proceedings.
The pub was shut down last month by the council as an interim step ahead of yesterday’s hearing.
The authority received 53 representations from members of the public in support of keeping the licence, as well as one in support of the police, details of which have not been revealed.
A Greene King staff member also said The Stanford Arms had been highlighted as a leading pub within the company’s supply chain.
The council’s published decision confirmed the committee decided to take away the pub’s licence as a result of the ‘violent assault’.
