A new Policing Performance System was introduced in April 2026 to assess and improve police performance across England and Wales by providing transparent and consistent assessments and facilitating earlier support.

Suffolk Police has been assigned to Level Two in this system, which allows for enhanced support to address ongoing performance issues.

The system, a joint initiative between the policing sector and the government, serves to help forces achieve better outcomes for communities through strengthened assessment, support, and intervention.

Level Two assignment indicates early or low-level concerns about Suffolk Police's performance, requiring monitoring and preventive actions to prevent issues from escalating.

Forces at Level Two are encouraged to undergo root cause analysis, develop performance improvement plans, and utilise performance support tools.

Additionally, they can access further support from stakeholders across the policing sector.

Overall, the Policing Performance System categorises forces into four performance levels, each with varying degrees of support and intervention based on current performance and needs.

Level One is the default and reflects a force making progress, Level Three involves more serious systemic issues, and Level Four (Special Measures) addresses critical failings with heightened oversight.

The Policing Performance Monitoring Group oversees these levels and ensures decisions are fair and evidence-based, involving representatives from policing and government.
