Suffolk MP calls Defence Secretary John Healey's resignation honourable
Healey steps down over inadequate investment in UK's defence strategy
Defence Secretary John Healey has resigned, citing substantial concerns over the allocation of resources towards the UK's Defence Investment Plan (DIP).
In his resignation letter to the Prime Minister, Healey expressed deep regret over the government's insufficient commitment to defence funding.
He claimed the lack of resources risked reducing UK armed forces' readiness, potentially endangering personnel and national security.
South Suffolk MP James Cartlidge, also shadow defence secretary, regarded Healey’s decision as "honourable" and praised his integrity.
Cartlidge asserted that Healey had "no choice" but to step down and criticised the government for prioritising welfare over national defence.
Cartlidge has been actively pressuring the government to outline its defence investment plans, underscoring the urgency given global circumstances.
The DIP is scheduled for release ahead of the NATO summit on 8th July.
