Police update on investigation into suspected threat at Suffolk event
Several individuals released without charge amid ongoing terror enquiry
The Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) team is continuing its investigation into a suspected threat targeting the UK Ijtima event, held at Shrubland Hall in Suffolk earlier this month.
Following multiple arrests, the investigation has seen significant developments, including the release of several individuals initially detained under terrorism legislation.
Arrests and Charges
A total of 13 people were detained in connection with the investigation, with eight individuals held under section 41 of the Terrorism Act, allowing up to seven days of detention.
On 18th July, seven men were released from custody without any charges.
A thirteenth individual, arrested for offences under section 5 of the Terrorism Act, has been released on bail under strict conditions.
Additionally, a 42-year-old man has been charged with possession of offensive weapons and a stun gun, although these charges are unrelated to the alleged threat against the event.
Continuing Investigation Efforts
Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of CTP London, said that although no evidence has currently been found to support charges linked directly to the reported threat, inquiries continue.
She reassured the public, particularly the Muslim community, that any potential offences or threats will be thoroughly pursued.
The investigation has involved significant efforts, including the search of residential addresses and vehicles, leading to the seizure of more than 35 digital devices.
Detective Chief Superintendent Paul Wells of Suffolk Constabulary expressed gratitude for the community's understanding and confirmed ongoing support for CTP efforts.
The CTP London team is leading the investigation with assistance from several regional units and remains in close contact with Suffolk Constabulary.
