Suffolk Coastal MP visits village at risk of further erosion damage

The MP for a coastal village in Suffolk says it could become host to a pilot scheme for preventing erosion, if residents can work successfully together to implement safety measures.

Jenny Riddell-Carpenter, the Labour representative for Suffolk Coastal, met more than 150 residents of Thorpeness to hear their concerns.

Recent rapid coastal erosion in the village has already claimed five homes, and hundreds more are in danger.

The pathway to the beach near North End Avenue is slowly being washed away, leaving properties on Old Homes Road at risk of flooding.

Ms Riddell-Carpenter said she would continue to put pressure on all stakeholders involved in sea defences in Thorpeness.

She added: "We've got an amazingly generous community here, who've pledged a lot of money if they're able to get the sea defences we want.

"If you're going to lose your home to the coast, then have to pay for demolition, and maybe have nowhere else to live, all of that seems absolutely insane to me and incredibly unfair.

"My work right now is helping people to make sure we get a better solution."
