Suffolk care home surprises resident with knight re-enactment
The pensioner shared stories of his love for re-enactment with staff
A Suffolk care home recently surprised a resident with a medieval re-enactment, honouring the 79-year-old’s passion for the historical hobby.
Care UK’s Hartismere Place in Eye arranged the visit from the Suffolk Swords, a historical re-enactment group, to delight Cliff Nicholson, a former radar systems engineer, who was forced to abandon reenactment after losing a leg due to diabetes.
The pensioner shared stories of his love for reenactment with staff, prompting them to organise a special afternoon featuring four people dressed in full suits of armour, who performed a mock battle and demonstrated the intricacies of knights’ armour at the care home.
Reflecting on the event, Mr Nicholson said, "I was delighted by the visit... It brought back many happy memories from my days taking part in reenactments."
Mr Nicholson also expressed a renewed interest in attending the Suffolk Military Show in Ipswich after the visit.
The event was part of Care UK’s Wishing Tree initiative, a program that encourages residents to suggest hobbies and experiences they are interested in pursuing, no matter how big or small.
Rebecca Calver, home manager at Hartismere Place, explained that the initiative aims to "celebrate people's interests and create meaningful moments."
Calver said, "Learning about Cliff's passion for medieval reenactment inspired us to see if we could bring a little bit of history to him."
