Two in five parents in the East of England are struggling to afford school uniforms, according to new research and the Salvation Army in Sudbury is stepping in to help.

A major poll by The Children’s Society found 41% of parents in the region are still feeling the pinch from high uniform costs. Nationally, thousands of children have faced punishments because of unaffordable uniforms, including detentions, isolation and even exclusions.

Mark Russell, Chief Executive of The Children’s Society, said:

“Every child in our region should be able to attend school without fear of being singled out because their parents can’t afford expensive branded items.”

‘People are just grateful’

In Sudbury, the Salvation Army runs a school uniform swap shop twice a year, a project that began after Covid and is supported by local businesses.

Major Diane Watson, the Commanding Officer in Sudbury, said:

“There is a constant demand for people to come and receive as well as bring items of school uniform.”

“We’re very well supported, people bring in items to the charity shop and any school uniform items are set aside for this appeal.”

She says for many families, the service takes the pressure off.

“People are just grateful that they can come and avail themselves of some of the pricier items at school uniform, which is often a struggle.”

A simple change could save money

Asked about ways to make school uniforms more affordable, Major Watson said:

“Schools that have logos… that’s the issue because that puts the price of items up significantly. It would be more helpful if they did a badge scheme so you could buy a cheaper blazer and stitch the badge on.”

The next Sudbury school uniform swap shop will take place this Thursday from 9:30 am, alongside the Salvation Army coffee morning.

“If we can be of help to people in whatever way, that’s why we’re here… so if it means school uniforms, then that’s the way forward,” Major Watson added.
