A 32-year-old man from Bury St Edmunds has been charged following an incident in which a person entered school premises in the local area.

On Monday, 6th July, staff at the school, located on Tollgate Lane, reported a man on the school grounds at 1.50pm.

In response, the school initiated lockdown procedures as a precaution, although it was confirmed the man did not enter any buildings or interact with students.

The arrest took place shortly after 2pm on Fornham Road, where police apprehended Luke Duartedias, who is of no-fixed-abode but resides in the Bury St Edmunds area.

Duartedias was charged with using threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear of or provoke unlawful violence.

Furthermore, he was charged with possession of a sharp pointed article in a public place after being found with a chisel at the time of his arrest.

Following the arrest, the school lifted its lockdown procedures.

Duartedias was remanded in custody and to appear at Ipswich Magistrates' Court today, Tuesday 7th July.

A spokesperson for Tollgate Primary School said: "We can confirm there was an incident on site which involved the police.

"We followed our policies and protocols for lockdown, as a precautionary measure, which ensured everyone’s safety. The children and staff responded promptly and calmly."
