A charity supporting struggling families in Suffolk is putting on a free Christmas dinner for those who need it.

The Salvation Army tells us with the current cost of living crisis, thousands across the country are expected to turn to it for help this festive season.

The group say it's doing all it can to support over 600 communities across the UK at this time of year, whatever their circumstances.

Major Alan Hill is from the charity in Woodbridge, and said: "I always remember I had a couple come to me, and they asked if they could come for Christmas dinner - and I said yeah, why not? - they told me all through the year, they sit together and don't have a conversation. So when they come, it's the fellowship.

"There are lots of people that will be sat at home not celebrating. I've been doing this job for more than 34 years - and every year has been the same. It's been a tremendous opportunity for people to come together and to share something, it's what Christmas is all about.

"For some, it's like their all time family reunions at Christmas, and it's a great atmosphere. I enjoy it.

"At the moment we've got about 22 people coming for Christmas day, we don't give a charge for our Christmas meals, they're all free.

"It gives me an opportunity to bring together lots of people, sing some Christmas carols and it also puts a smile on people's faces. It shows something of the love and care that I have personally for those in our society that sometimes need a little help."

In October, the charity in Woodbridge completed refurbishment work, including the installation of disabled toilets, as well as a shower for rough sleepers at the church and charity on New Street.

Other changes included the extension of the kitchen, in preparation for Christmas day.
