A man has been jailed for 30 years for attempted murder and aggravated burglary after stabbing a woman eight times during a break-in in Pinewood, near Ipswich.
Elliott Mallett, 24, from Hawthorn Drive, Ipswich, was sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court on Monday, 8th December, following his conviction in September. He must serve at least 20 years of his prison term before he is eligible for parole and will also face an additional five years on licence.
Attack at Pinewood home
The attack occurred on 7th December last year, when Mallett broke into a house on Admiral Road.
The victim, a woman in her 40s, was upstairs when she heard a noise and went to investigate. She encountered an unknown man, now identified as Mallett, on the stairs.
Mallett pulled a knife from his side and attacked her, stabbing her multiple times on her neck, face, hands, shoulder, and leg. Despite her injuries, the victim fought him off, kicking him down the stairs before fleeing to a neighbour’s house to seek help.
Emergency services were called, and police launched a search for the attacker. The woman was treated for her injuries at the hospital and discharged the same night.
Investigation uncovers evidence
During searches in Ellenbrook Park, officers encountered Mallett, who falsely claimed he had been a victim of an attempted robbery. Police initially treated him as a possible victim but grew suspicious after inconsistencies appeared in his account.
Officers seized Mallett’s clothing and collected evidence, which linked him to the break-in and attack. Key items, including belongings stolen from the victim and a knife engraved with ‘Maggi Soups,’ were discovered near the scene and at his home.
Analysis of Mallett’s phone revealed it had been present at the victim’s house just minutes before she called 999. Additionally, he sent messages to a friend referencing the stabbing, despite no official details being released at the time of his arrest.
Mallett denied the charges but was convicted of attempted murder and aggravated burglary by unanimous jury verdicts.
Victim speaks out
The victim said in her personal statement: “The day I was attacked in my own home shattered everything I knew about safety, trust, and stability.”
She explained the emotional toll the attack had taken on her life, leaving her withdrawn, suffering from flashbacks, and feeling constantly on edge.
Detective Chief Inspector Matt Adams described the attack as “ferocious and senseless,” saying Mallett’s actions caused lasting harm to the victim. He praised her courage and added that Mallett had shown no remorse for his crime.
Detective Constable Alice Gaffer, the officer in the case, commended the victim’s bravery during and after the attack, recognising the significant emotional impact it had on her. She also thanked those involved in the investigation for helping to secure Mallett’s conviction.
