Lowestoft man who made abusive calls to 999 avoids jail

A 49-year-old man from Lowestoft has been sentenced for making abusive 999 calls to Suffolk Constabulary.
Nicky Houghton, residing at Normanston Drive, appeared before Great Yarmouth Magistrates’ Court on 12th August, facing charges for the persistent misuse of public communication networks.
On the afternoon of 20th July, police were alerted by Houghton, who claimed a red vehicle attempted to knock him off his bicycle.
Despite attempts by the call taker to gather more information, Houghton swore repeatedly and threatened violence against the driver.
Police found Houghton intoxicated and unable to recall details of his report upon arrival.
In the early hours of 21st July, Houghton made six further calls to Suffolk Constabulary’s Contact and Control Room, which featured verbal abuse and inappropriate comments.
He was warned, his number blocked, and subsequently arrested at 3:10am.
Records show Houghton made 11 previous similar calls since June 2026.
He pleaded guilty to the charges and received a nine-week custodial sentence, suspended for nine months, with requirements to undergo alcohol treatment.
Additionally, he is responsible for paying costs and a surcharge totaling £239.
Chief Inspector Andy Pursehouse voiced concern over Houghton's behavior, emphasizing the strain put on emergency services by such calls.
He said: “Our call takers play a pivotal role in supporting the public; often they are the first responders to the public in an emergency or threat to life situation.
“Repeat or hoax calls to 999 puts lives at risk because they could block our ability to respond to those in genuine need of emergency services in a timely manner.
“Houghton’s behaviour was unacceptable and I hope his sentence serves as a reminder that all calls are recorded and we will take appropriate action against those who misuse the 999 system.”
