Ipswich Town have submitted plans to expand and modernise the West Stand area at Portman Road as the club looks to improve facilities after returning to the Premier League.

The application includes changes to kiosks and concourse areas, a refurbished fanzone, extra parking, new gates and landscaping, plus the removal of temporary portacabins.

Portman Road is currently one of the biggest football grounds in East Anglia, with a capacity of about 30,000.

The West Stand itself holds roughly 8,000 supporters and is the oldest part of the stadium, first opened in 1957 before later expansions.

The proposed work forms part of wider long-term plans to redevelop and expand the ground further.

Ipswich chairman Mark Ashton previously said the club wants to eventually increase Portman Road’s capacity towards 40,000, with the West Stand expected to be upgraded before any larger rebuild of the Cobbold Stand.

Ipswich secured promotion back to the Premier League for the 2026/27 season and have already started a number of stadium improvements this summer, including safe standing areas, better disabled access and upgrades to fan facilities.

The planning application is now being considered by Ipswich Borough Council.
