Delays in opening have been caused by unforeseen issues with the roof.

The long-awaited redevelopment of Ipswich Museum has entered its final stage, bringing the reopening of the historic building a step closer.

Ipswich Museum, first opened on the High Street back in 1881, with some of the exhibitions being around since its doors first opened.

And now, 145 years later, Ipswich Borough Council says major construction work on the museum is now complete, and has been made possible by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, including structural improvements such as a new roof, stairway and lift.

The project on the Grade II listed building started back in October 2022 and will now move into its final phase, installing galleries and displays to bring the town’s history and collections to life.

"I don’t think many people perhaps realise just how important it is as a town in history"

Frank Hargrave, Head of Museums for Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service, said the transformation will allow the museum to better showcase its significance.

“I think it’s seeing the realisation of what the museum could be,” he said.

“From the outside, it doesn’t look huge necessarily, but when you go in you realise how big it is… and the importance of the collections.”

He said the updated space will help highlight Ipswich’s historical importance.

“I don’t think many people perhaps realise just how important it is as a town in history… it’s something to be incredibly proud of,” he said.

The redevelopment has included improvements to accessibility, with a new lift, better layout and upgraded facilities, including a café and toilets.

"This is a moment we’ve been waiting for"

Ipswich Museums Manager Alison Hall said the project has been a long time coming.

“It’s so exciting… this is a moment we’ve been waiting for,” she said.

“It’s been a massive project… there’s been a few unexpected surprises along the way.”

She added that the redesign is more accessible and make the museum easier to navigate for visitors.

“You’ll notice that there’s a lot less dead ends… fewer ramps and steps,” she said.

“It’s about making sure that visitors… there’s something here for everybody.”

The project has faced challenges during its development, including structural issues and rising costs.

Mr Hargrave said: “There were some issues… more than we anticipated… so there’s been a lot of work from that perspective that’s had to be compensated for.”

Councillor Carole Jones, Ipswich Borough Council’s portfolio holder for planning and museums, described the milestone as “very exciting” and said the project represents a major investment in the town’s cultural future.

The council will now consider proposals for additional funding needed to complete the final phase.

Once finished, the museum is expected to offer a more accessible and modern experience, while showcasing Ipswich’s heritage to new audiences.

Mr Hargrave said the revamped museum could help inspire future generations.

“It will set particularly children’s imaginations alight,” he said.
