Jack Abbott, Member of Parliament for Ipswich, is urging pubs and hotels in the area to participate in the Labour Government's independent review of business rates valuations, with submissions due by this Friday, 16th October.

The review aims to assess how business rates are calculated for pubs and hotels after businesses and industry leaders expressed concerns about the outcomes of the 2026 revaluation, noting significant valuation changes and increases for certain properties.

Under the leadership of rating adviser Jerry Schurder, the review will evaluate whether existing valuation methods accurately reflect market conditions and are applied consistently and transparently.

Pub and hotel operators, industry bodies, valuation professionals, and other stakeholders are encouraged to submit their experiences and suggest improvements.

The review seeks evidence on how rents are determined, how trading performance is reflected, and whether current valuation strategies accurately represent business realities.

“Pubs and hotels are integral to Ipswich, creating jobs and enriching community life,” Jack Abbott said.

“I believe the current valuation system is flawed and have advocated for a review to ensure it aligns with business needs.”

The review will offer recommendations on possible improvements to valuation methods before the next revaluation, though it will not reassess overall business rates liabilities.

Local businesses can submit contributions until 11:59pm on 16th October 2026.
