Ipswich man ordered to repay nearly £19,000 after housing fraud conviction
Mahmut Dagdelen must compensate Ipswich Borough Council following fraud conviction
An Ipswich man has been ordered by a court to pay £18,767.82 after being convicted of social housing fraud.
Mahmut Dagdelen, from Braziers Wood Road in Ipswich, was sentenced for five counts of fraud in July 2025, under the Fraud Act 2006, for submitting false applications for social housing and misusing the Right to Buy scheme.
At Ipswich Crown Court on 25th June 2026, a Confiscation Order was made under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, mandating that Mr Dagdelen pay nearly £19,000, reflecting his financial gain from his crimes.
The court heard that Mr Dagdelen had already paid £139,332.18 in compensation to Ipswich Borough Council to cover losses incurred due to his fraudulent actions.
Alongside this, the court ordered Mr Dagdelen to cover £8,955.50 in costs to Ipswich Borough Council within six months, as well as a £140 victim surcharge.
The case arose from an extensive investigation by Ipswich Borough Council's Corporate Fraud Team, which revealed that Mr Dagdelen's fraudulent activities spanned over six years.
Councillor Martin Cook, Portfolio Holder for Resources, emphasised the importance of such legal actions, saying: “This outcome demonstrates our commitment to pursuing those who seek to abuse the social housing system and ensuring that public money is protected.
“Social housing is a valuable resource that must be available to those who genuinely need it. Fraud of this nature undermines fairness and can deny housing opportunities to residents and families who are entitled to support.
“I would like to thank our Corporate Fraud Team for their persistence and professionalism throughout this complex investigation and the subsequent court proceedings. We will continue to investigate allegations of housing fraud and take appropriate action wherever wrongdoing is identified.”
