Ipswich Borough Council has confirmed plans to sell the former Crown Court site on Civic Drive, which has been unused since 2023.

Originally constructed in the 1960s as part of the Civic Centre Complex, the site previously served as the Crown Court until 2004, when operations moved to a new facility on Russell Road.

The council acquired the freehold of the 21,000-square-foot site in January 2014, with parking for 22 cars across its basement, ground, and first floors.

A property agent has now been instructed to manage the sale after options for its retention were reviewed.

Council leader Neil MacDonald explained the decision supports the town's Property Asset Management Strategy and Corporate Strategy: Proud of Ipswich.

“Ensuring there is ongoing use of the former Crown Court supports our vision for a thriving town centre," MacDonald said.

"By marketing the site for sale, we can ensure all options are considered that will lead to this site being of long-term benefit to the town centre.”

The move aims to remove a deteriorating asset while enabling future development in line with council priorities for a thriving town centre. It also supports financial sustainability by generating capital receipts and reducing liabilities.

The site is now heading to the open market as Ipswich Borough Council seeks buyers for the prominent location.
