A second person has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a 28-year-old man at HMP Highpoint Prison in Stradishall.

The investigation began after the deceased, an inmate at the prison, passed away at Addenbrooke's Hospital on Tuesday, 27th January, shortly after being readmitted.

Police said the man had first been admitted to hospital on Friday, 23rd January, after being attacked by another prisoner. He received treatment and returned to custody but was readmitted before he died.

Detectives arrested a man in his 20s on Friday, 30th January, in connection with the murder. He was taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning and has since been released back into prison custody under investigation.

Today, Tuesday, 3rd February, a second inmate in his 30s was also arrested at Highpoint Prison on suspicion of murder. He has been transferred to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

A Home Office post-mortem examination carried out on Friday, 30th January did not determine a definitive cause of death, and further investigations are underway.

The victim has yet to be formally identified. Police confirmed that his family is being supported by officers trained in handling sensitive cases.

Detectives say they're working closely with HMP Highpoint to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack and the subsequent death of the inmate.
