72-year-old sentenced after incident on Jubilee Walk

A 72-year-old man has been sentenced after assaulting a woman on Jubilee Walk in Haverhill.

The police were called at 2.20pm on Thursday, 18th December, after reports of a woman in her 40s being grabbed by the throat and pushed.

Officers arrested Robert Rooney, of Eastern Avenue, shortly afterwards on suspicion of non-fatal intentional strangulation. He was taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

Rooney was charged with assault and remanded in custody the following day, Friday, 19th December.

He appeared before Ipswich Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, 20th December, where he pleaded guilty to the offence.

Rooney was sentenced to one day's detention, which was deemed served during his time in custody.
